Waldorf Grade 8 Chemistry

Class 8 had fun with chemistry and the secrets of soap. In live zoom they did a collaborative story writing exercise and came up with tiny soap stories. At home, they did little experiments of making soap.

Team 1:

One summer day, Mr. Lye from the village of Alkali was cooling down in the nearby river when he saw his friend, old Mr. Oil. It was a pleasant surprise, as Mr. Lye had not seen his friend in quite a while. So they sat down and talked about the many adventures that they had in helping humanity. Keep in mind, it was a VERY hot day, and Mr. Lye and Mr. Oil did not notice how they seemed to have become liquid. They decided to cool down by taking a swim, but when they got out, they noticed that they could no longer go their separate ways, for they had become one, in the form of soap. And still today, Mr. Oil and Mr. Lye help you clean your hands.

Team 2:

Soap mixing with warm water. Bubbles of air float before plunging down as dishes pile up. Oil dancing in open water, clinging to dirty metal. Bubbles sloshing as they're pushed around a dish, pulling oil with them down the drain. Returning back to the earth.

Team 3:

I was just an oil, minding my own business, when all of a sudden it got very hot and I got spun around and around. I was very dizzy, so dizzy that I started to have a breakdown, literally! I started to turn into alkali, or sodium hydroxide. Now I’m glycerol and I feel a lot more solid than I did before. Hey, wait a minute, I’m soap! At least I’m a lot cleaner now…
