PARENT CHILD

The ages of birth to four years are magical years of rapid growth in the body, in speech and language, and in the development of the child becoming their own person and discovering themselves and the world that surrounds them.

With the Content Toddlers & Joyful Parents Class you can expect to be supported in your parenting journey by our lead teacher Miss Tiffany as well as to become part of a community of parents that also have children in this stage of early childhood development. You will be guided on how to bring a meaningful "life as the curriculum" to your growing child.

You will receive a weekly lesson plan that will inspire you to find a beautiful working rhythm in your home as well as to bring beautiful Waldorf Education elements to your young child. The lesson plan will include a seasonal circle (with many songs, verses, parent/child lap games, and fingerplays), a weekly story or puppet play, a movement game, a lullaby for bedtime, a weekly recipe, festival suggestions, and handwork craft to do with your child. It will also include weekly meditations for the parents, handwork suggestions for the parents as well as an article that will be on either an aspect of Waldorf Education or early childhood development. This article is typically what is discussed in the following week's Parent Meeting Zoom.

In addition to the weekly lesson plan, there will be videos/audios provided showing the circle with movement game, storytime, and the lullaby. Parents will be invited to a weekly Zoom meeting. The Zoom will begin with the children for those that are interested in coming and they can show their handwork, paintings, drawings, modeling, or any other things they created from the week. I will also sing a song, a nursery rhyme, present part of our circle or story with them. After the children's time, we will have a parent meeting where I will present a topic typically from our prior week's article, and then we can have an open dialogue, community building, and a time for questions and support.

These early years are magical gifts to both children and their parents. However, it takes a village to raise a child. So let's build the village together, build a healthy foundation for the young children, and watch how they bloom and grow into beautiful humans. Let's also support each other as parents, build community in these uncertain times, and watch as we unfold in our own parenting journey.

CLASS 1

Once upon a time, a class full of knights, wizards, fairies, princes, and princesses set out on a journey to discover new places, stories, and many new things in the world around them. … It is a great privilege to guide them as they continue their journey down the Class One path. The weeks of this school year are woven together with magical threads of fairy tales.  As the children experience this significant transition time from Early Childhood years into Grade School, they are enveloped by the mists of the fairy tale realm encountering various characters and events that bring to them the experiences of various archetypes of the human being reflecting the brightly shining virtues of courage, honesty, and goodness. The entire curriculum is presented in a way that appeals to the child’s sense of wonder and fosters the child’s capacities of imagination supporting them in building their own inner pictures from the stories, songs, and learning experiences. The letters of the alphabet are introduced through storytelling and beautiful drawings that give rise to letter symbols.  Sound and symbol relationships are practiced through the writing of short sentences that gradually become a little longer as the year nears its end. Children prepare to begin reading. Numeracy skills and familiarity with the four basic math processes are developed during this school year. Qualities of the number are explored first through story and movement followed by the experiences that engage the children in their quantitative and ordinal aspects. Rhythm, speech, and physical movement activities assist the children in the development of balance, coordination, and left/right recognition. Furthermore, nature stories, songs, music, poetry, handwork, painting, guided drawing, and beeswax modeling weave together each lesson block, bringing it to life in beautiful and lively ways.

CLASS 2

During this school year, children find themselves on the threshold of the awakening glimpses of the middle years of childhood. They begin to wonder and experience in new ways qualities and contrasts of virtues and shortcomings, kindness and cruelty, honesty and trickery, joy and sadness, and so on. They begin to question others’ honesty and might even wonder about their own nature. To meet them in this realm of feeling, curriculum brings stories of heroes, legends of Saints, and various animal fables from around the world. While the striving and noble human deeds are highlighted in the stories of heroes and saints, the arising contrasts in the children’s experience of the world are met with the fables and tales that bring an imaginative connection to the traits of a trickster and a mischief seeker.During this year, the sense of belonging and familiar rhythms continue to be of great importance for the children as they move through a new way of experiencing the world. We begin to observe their growing interest in the unique traits of others and their expanding social awareness. Basic academic skills are practiced at a faster pace than they were the year before. Writing and reading practice make a big leap in pace and expectations. In the world of numbers, the experience of the qualities of numbers gives way to the recognition and work with their quantitative aspects expanding further into their relationship to space and time. Classwork builds upon the processes children learned the year before and takes them further towards mastering the times’ tables and working with larger numbers and place value. Rhythmic movements and experience of sequence and number patterns, and the work with word questions all continue. An experiential exploration of a child’s immediate surroundings expands through nature walks, nature stories, and practical work, planting the seeds for future science studies in upper grades. The class continues watercolor painting practice as an experience in color, moods, light, and relationships. Beeswax modeling, as well as crayon and form drawing, bring the children further into the realm of beauty found in color, light, and form.
