This 9th grade English course develops students’ reading, writing, and communication skills through the study of classical literature and the modern novel. Students read and analyze a range of literary genres including epic and mythic narratives, drama, poetry, short fiction, and full-length novels. Emphasis is placed on close reading, literary analysis, theme and character development, structure and style, and the historical and cultural contexts of major works.

Students complete frequent analytical and creative writing assignments, including paragraphs, essays, and sustained compositions that demonstrate comprehension, textual evidence, and clear organization. Instruction includes vocabulary development, grammar and mechanics, writing process skills (planning, drafting, revising, editing), and structured discussion. Students participate in oral presentations and seminar-style dialogue to strengthen speaking and listening skills. Assessment includes reading responses, essays, projects, quizzes/tests, presentations, and cumulative evaluations.
